Big in Japan

Okinawan alleged rape - another viewpoint

I’ve got a fair few contacts, both Japanese and foreign within Okinawa, and almost everyone is talking about this rape case. The media are getting whipped up into a huge frenzy and this guy is already a kidnapper, rapist and God knows what else in the eyes of many Okinawans. What I would like to do today though is pass on some views from someone I know. My source for this is going to remain anonymous, but it is definitely someone who knows what they are talking about, and I thank them for letting me post their comments on the case:

“After two days of talking about this with the wife and watching the news some shit is way over our heads and a lot of it is cultural and alot of it is witch hunting. First off she’s 14 no excuse on the guys behalf. I don’t care if she said she was 18 If you cant tell 14 from 18 you need glasses. The Police will take the girls statement as is. The women’s organization is fighting to keep the girl from being tested. Why?? It’s easier to get a blind conviction that way. The girl is known as being a “Yankee” and knew what she was getting into. If she was a virgin and he can get the police to finally run the test he’ll be clear. That’s the reason the women’s organization is trying to block it. The police will him-haw around till the last moment where if she wasn’t a virgin and was raped it will be to late to tell. This is what they want. They just took the car in as evidence yesterday and they’ll drag it out as long as they can to try to get him to confess to something he didn’t do. They’ll even half ass the statements to make it sound like he did (I speak from experience) so it will sound better for the judge. Now culturally, Japan has a huge paedophile problem. Talk to any women and they can tell you tales of there friends or themselves or a girl they new in jr high or highschool that would date 30-40… hell 60 year old men for money. When they get caught its the same but low key and they try to save face for him and the girl. I personally know a 66 year old man that has a 20 year old girlfriend that he’s been dating 4 years (do the math) and his defense is that its Japanese culture. That it happens more then anyone could ever realize. The only difference I see is that this time a American tried it and got caught red handed and the girl is trying to defend herself and will let this guy rot in a cell for 20 years to save her own face. Does he deserve it?? On one hand yes he tried to screw a kid but does he deserve rape charges if he really didn’t??? I don’t think so but I guarantee he’ll get it anyways.

Anybody hear about the marine back in 2000 that was caught having sex on the hood of a car with a girl he met at a club then when people saw her stopped and in her defense she went and told the onlookers it was rape?? He’s still in jail and even her friends have come out and said she should tell the truth that she was being a ho and clear the guy….

It has yet to happen”

Just something else for you to think about in this case.

Well, too bad for the Marine the US government wont really help him, guilty or innocent. Its better for PR if it looks like the guy has done wrong to let the Japanese Gov. have at him. I know that when my husband and I got here, we were told by legal, if you get into real trouble, find your own lawyer because if your guilty we are not going to help you.

So guilty or not, unless this guy can find serious evidence that he did nothing other than kiss her, he is going to hang out to dry with no legal help.

OK, but even if he did nothing other than kiss her, he’s still been kissing a 14 year old girl and deserves to get the book thrown at him for that.

One other comment worth throwing in here is that Japanese kids have a curfew at night. Can’t find on the net the exact times, but a few questions from Japanese friends have been asked as to why she was out after curfew anyway.

I agree kissing her was stupid and well, disgusting. But if the guy wisened up after kissing her, realized what he was doing or perhaps her age then I don’t think that deserves quite as much punishment as perhaps some one who did not and persued someone who was underage intentionally even after realizing what was going on.

It wasn’t her age that dissuaded him as he has said that he thought she was over 18. Whether it was the guy backing off or the girl managing to get away, only 2 people probably know at this time. I agree he should get whatever punishment fits this crime, and I know if it was my daughter this had happened to it would probably be me going to jail and him going to the morgue. But he shouldn’t be charged with rape if it didn’t happen.

I’ve got another update coming up on this story as soon as I get a couple of sources of information confirmed.
