Some small updates
Well, I’ve not a huge amount to report, but for those that are interested in what is happening in my life, here is a bit of an update.
Last weekend started off disappointingly, with Wigan losing to Leeds in the Final Eliminator of rugby league’s Superleague. After 3 excellent victories against St Helens, Bradford and then Hull (the latter 2 away from home), playing at Headingley against a full-strength Leeds team was just too much for them. The team had nothing left in the tank and it was showing after the first 5-10 minutes. So it will be a Leeds-St Helens final on Saturday at Old Trafford in the Grand Final. Will be hoping for a Leeds win (although don’t really want them to win either!), although family loyalties still hope that a certain Saints player has a good game.

And then throughout the weekend there was no diving possible, due to typhoon Krosa being in the area. Although it didn’t hit Okinawa, it stirred up the ocean enough to make it dangerous to get in. Even more annoying was that this past weekend was a 3-day weekend; October 8th being Health & Sports Day in Japan. It would have been good to get into the water as I’ve a couple of students who I could have finished off, and have a bunch of Open Water students who I’ll get into the pool once it’s available. The previous week, I certified 2 open water students, who were model students and who left very kind words in the testimonials section of this site. They turned up on time (unbelievable, considering they are foreign teachers in Okinawa!), and were excellent students doing the skills and theory work. This coming Sunday I will hopefully get an Advanced Open Water diver finished up, but Saturday I have other plans. I’ll be heading out to the Kerama islands on a boat for a day of diving I’ve organised. I’ve got 10 or 11 people coming on the boat (providing everyone turns up) and it should be a great day providing the weather holds. No typhoons on the horizon at the moment so things are looking good.
But I was talking about last weekend, so I’ll head back there now. So instead of diving, I went driving! I drove up to the race “circuit” at Nago, in fact. I say circuit… it is more like an enlarged car park, but you can’t have everything. A bunch of US military people were doing a car testing and tuning day and I decided to tootle along and have a look at what was going on. It was a pretty good afternoon actually, and I met a couple of people I’d previously been chatting to online. They were drifting and doing drag runs (sadly, only over 150m, such is the length of the circuit) and I went with one of the guys for a drifting session which was very cool. I was so tempted to get in my car and do a drag run or 2, but I refrained. It was my first time there and I just wanted to watch and see how everything was done. Plus, I’d probably do something silly like miss third gear as I’m speeding up, which would be highly embarrassing in front of plenty of people!
And then last night I met up with a British girl who’s living on Okinawa. She’s married to a guy in the US military, and has been on Okinawa for about a year now. She’s also got a Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution but hers is an Evo III (and a very nice one too, I hasten to add). We got on really well and it was good to chat to someone British too for a change. She seemed really cool and so hopefully we’ll become decent friends from this.
And that’s about it to be honest. Work, life, love are progressing as normal and nothing too exciting happening at the moment. As soon as it does though, I’ll be sure to write an entry here about it!
