Koda Kumi - corrupting the kids!
I remember seeing this TV slot when it was on last year, but I’ve just been sent it again and thought I would pass it on to see what you folks make of it.
I’m sure everyone out there who knows anything about Japanese
music knows Koda Kumi (see right) - along with Ayumi Hamasaki & Utada Hikaru, one of the most popular J-pop singers. Let’s not take into account the fact that she talks like a Kansai obaa-chan (grandmother) on about 50 a day, or that she was described as looking like a “pug-faced prostitute” (harsh but fair) by one of my friends here in Japan. Sex and sluttiness sells in Japan, and Kumi has it in abundance.
Anyway, in this clip they held a competition for kids aged between 2 and 10 to dress up in sexy costumes a-la Koda Kumi, put on make up (seemingly with a trowel) and dance their hearts out. What follows is one of the most disturbing pieces of TV I think I have ever witnessed!
Here is the first part of the show. See if you can stomach the whole thing!
Let me know if you want me to post the other clips. And we’ll finish with a pic that kind of sums up Koda Kumi nicely:

I don’t think Koda Kumi is the only one to blame. What about the parents who allow their daughters to do this?
Well, the parents’ parenting skills in Japan are sometimes to be questionable. These are parents who will frequently let their kids jump and dance about in the passenger and back seats of cars. I saw one dancing on their mother’s lap the other day, while she was driving!
To each his own I guess. Sometimes I am surprised at what is acceptable in Japan and sometimes I am surprised at what is acceptable in the US. Everyone has pros and cons.
But I think much of the world is seeing the new trend in ‘little adults’. Kids always want to be adults, and when most of the people they see on TV dress and act a certain way, of course they want to be that.
Hi Dave,
It’s similar hre in Thaialnd, kids are actually allowed to perform on TV shows, something that’s unthinable in the Netherlands.
Hi Dave,
It’s similar here in Thailand, kids are actually allowed to perform on TV shows, something that’s unthinkable in the Netherlands.
