Cherry blossoms!
Can’t believe I hardly mentioned the cherry blossoms (sakura) in my previous post. That was the reason why both Osaka and Kyoto were hella-busy last week… The blossoms were just starting to come into bloom while I was there, although for the full effect I think I needed to be there a week later. They were pretty stunning though, especially around Gion in Kyoto and near Osaka castle. I managed to get some good close-up shots of them which are on my website, and seeing them in Kyoto has made me the envy of almost all the teaching staff and student body at school!
Although I was told a particularly dusturbing story by a 3rd year student today. Apparently the cherry blossom originally got its colour from people who died under it, their blood going into the tree. And this was from one of my brightest students - another reason why this country is truly bizarre… but I love it!
